Producing a Stallion Is Only the Beginning

In a small breed population, preserving male lines requires more than producing promising colts. A stallion cannot contribute to the future of the breed unless someone is willing and able to keep him intact, develop him, promote him, manage breeding arrangements, and make him reasonably accessible to mare owners.

Born after her sire’s death, Shotgun Sally from Jackson Brook is a reminder that a stallion’s opportunity to contribute is limited, but his influence may continue through both sons and daughters.

Even a worthy stallion may receive few opportunities. Distance, collection and shipping expenses, mare-owner preferences, limited facilities, training demands, and the cost of maintaining a stallion can all affect whether he ever contributes, or whether his male line continues.

The discussion may include promotion, training, mare owner communication, breeding arrangements, veterinary and collection expenses, housing, safety, and the challenge of giving individual stallions meaningful opportunities within a small population.

We are developing a new page recognizing Lippitt mares, stallions, and geldings participating in performance, sport, working, and recreational activities. Because competition records generally identify these horses simply as Morgans, their Lippitt heritage and contributions may go unnoticed.

This new page will help make their accomplishments, and the versatility of the Lippitt Morgan, more visible.

As we build this page, LLP invites owners to share the accomplishments and adventures of their Lippitts, past and present. Help us show the world what Lippitts are doing and what they are capable of.

We also wish everyone participating in the Lippitt Country Show a successful and enjoyable weekend. We look forward to seeing and hearing about the Lippitts representing their breeders, owners, and bloodlines in Vermont.
